AED vs Manual Defibrillator: Which One Do You Need?

Sudden cardiac arrest is treated with CPR and an electric shock from a defibrillator, and every minute without defibrillation lowers the chance of survival. There are two broad kinds of defibrillator, designed for different users.

Automated external defibrillator (AED)

An AED is built for first responders with little or no medical training. Once the pads are placed on the chest, it analyses the heart rhythm itself and uses voice and visual prompts to tell the rescuer what to do. It advises a shock only when it detects a shockable rhythm. AEDs suit offices, factories, schools, malls, gyms, hotels, residential complexes, clinics and ambulances.

Manual defibrillator-monitor

A manual defibrillator is used by trained doctors and nurses. It displays the ECG so the clinician can decide when to shock and at what energy. Most hospital models also offer an AED mode, synchronised cardioversion for certain arrhythmias, a printer, and optional pacing, SpO2 or EtCO2. These suit ICUs, emergency departments, OTs, cath labs and advanced ambulances.

Biphasic or monophasic?

Biphasic defibrillators reverse the current direction during the shock and are effective at lower energy. They are now the standard choice. Monophasic units are older technology still found in some facilities.

Running costs and readiness

  • Pads have an expiry date and must be replaced after every use.
  • Batteries need replacing or charging according to the manufacturer.
  • Daily or weekly self-tests and a visible status indicator help keep the device ready.
  • For public places, a wall cabinet with signage and an alarm helps people find the AED quickly.

Training

An AED is designed to be used by anyone, but short training in CPR and AED use gives staff the confidence to act. Medasus can arrange training on the equipment we supply.
